India @ 67 – A Mirage or Reality ?

It’s been 3 years and once again I find myself revisiting the topic of independence. Somewhere deep within us resides the desire to celebrate our independence day in our very own way. Manifestation of that desire is different for each one of us.  Some see it as a good opportunity to celebrate a long weekend; some prefer keeping small flags in their cars or on their desks while some prefer displaying their love for the nation through the social media. One can never forget the flag hoisting assembly and parade during their school days, few might find it irrelevant today but nonetheless it always remains as a significant gesture making impressions on young hearts.

Opinions differ on why we should celebrate independence as cynicism prevails all around. Political, social, and economic disparity looms over the nation adversely affecting each one of us yet we all continue to survive and thrive. Onions literally making us cry ; politicians making us proud by scandalizing every issue and throwing tantrums at each other; Rupee is gaining glory inching closer to $65; inflation hitting the highs and industrial production reaching the lows; food grains rotting and children dying of malnutrition; neighbors creating havoc – encroaching territories, beheading, ambushing soldiers and spreading endless terror; burning submarine engulfing brave sailors onboard; scams and corruptions spreading tentacles ever so swiftly; plundering of natural diversity and wealth; potholes breaking backs ; apathy looming at large; and yet amidst this chaos our nation thrives…thrives on hope!

A nation celebrates the “Bronze Age” once again - women’s junior hockey team’s 3rd place at the FIH World Cup and a teenager Sindhu’s triumphant bronze quest at the World Badminton Championship. Let us hope that as “Iron Age” followed the “Bronze Age”, our resolve for glory and success rises to the same heights.

"To be free is not merely to cast off one's chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others”
- Nelson Mandela

Our independence movement was built on similar principles not just to free us from the shackles of the British rule but to construct equilibrium where all castes, creeds and cultures thrive in unison. Built on a dream of bringing back the “Golden Age” of erstwhile India into reality, the movement faltered aimlessly post independence.

Long forgotten is the ethos of this freedom movement and what is left is a mere illusion called freedom.  “Ne majasi nhe parat matrubhumi la, sagara pran talmala” (O seas take me back, for my heart and life seeks to free my motherland) said Swatantryaveer Vinayak Sawarkar while suffering incredible pain at the hands of British at Andaman islands. Innocent deaths at the Jallianwala Baug and three young brave hearts made the supreme sacrifice by willingly embracing the gallows to make the government realize their crimes. Subhashchandra Bose who fought all odds and appealed to his fellow brothers “tum muzhe khoon do main tumhain azadi doonga” (stand by me for supreme sacrifice and I promise you freedom in return), was lost in oblivion never to be found. Non-cooperation and Quit India movements created a stir and made the rulers realize that Indians would give anything for freedom. Post independence, communal factions divided the nation and massacred innocents. Boundaries were drawn and families were separated. A hasty unilateral decision by our then PM to refer the war issue in J&K to the UN created a crises whose brunt is being felt by generations in J&K and the region once a heavenly abode is now in ruins and disarray. Politics took prominence over reforms until a day came when economy could no longer sustain and we had to open the doors to FDI. Political ineptitude, social inequality and economic instability have led us on a downhill path.
Yet in all this melancholy, India shines. Innumerable cases of courage and strength from the grass root level to the highest echelons of our society have shown us shining examples of growth and success. Individuals are succeeding in different walks of life and unsung heroes are found all around us.

“The world is indeed full of peril and in it there are many dark places. But still there is much that is fair. And though in all lands, love is now mingled with grief, it still grows, perhaps, the greater.”
- J.R.R. Tolkien, The Lord of the Rings.

Bureaucratic and political interference have always delayed procurement for armed forces be it combat aircraft, artillery guns, submarines, other armaments and their spares; yet we have seen success in testing and deploying indigenous designed aircraft carrier, ballistic missiles, satellites, etc. Social revolution has been instrumental in bettering lives of people across the spectrum, creating awareness for key issues and innovative methods to bring about a change. We have witnessed unprecedented success in sports and entertainment though lot more remains to be achieved. Engineering marvels like the Kashmir Railway the war-torn and troubled J&K is the proof point that we can make it happen if resolve is hard.  We have always faced natural (ex: recent Uttarakhand floods) and man-made (ex: 26/11 Mumbai attacks and bomb blasts in different cities) calamities with a right spirit and overcome them.

Replace jingoism with realistic patriotism. Each one of us has to believe in our India story.

Hope is the thing with feathers, That perches in the soul
And sings the tune without the words, And never stops at all.”
- Emily Dickinson

So let us kindle the light of hope in our hearts for a bright future.

Humbling Experience - Meeting Sindhutai Sapkal !!!

After a traumatic couple of days post my beloved grandmother’s death (11 Nov 2012), today we were blessed by “Maai” ( Sindhutai Sapkal is called “Maai”).
As per my grandmom’s wishes no religious ceremonies were conducted after her death and money was donated on her as well as my late grandfather’s ( died 18 Aug 2011) behalf towards Sindhutai’s mission.

Pic: My family with Maai in the centre, her own daughter on extreme left and her 1st adopted son on the extreme right.

Yesterday we contacted Maai’s mission in Hadapsar, Pune and to our surprise we actually spoke to Maai herself where she cordially invited us to come over.
She even gave us the directions to reach her mission’s office as well as status in Pune especially sue to recent Sugarcane Farmer agitation at Swargate Pune.

We reached her office in Hadapsar today around 11:30am and she welcomed us cordially. We were surprised and taken aback by her humility and her team’s supportive nature.
Maai gave us ample time to introduce us, talk to her and convey our heartfelt regards. We were just total strangers just with a desire to meet her and help her mission.
Today was 14th November – Children’s Day and Maai celebrates her birthday symbolically with all the kids of her mission at Mamata Bal Sadan, Kumbharvalan, Saswad, Pune.
Later she asked us to visit her newly built Sanmati Bal Niketan, Bhelhekar Vasti, Hadapsar, Pune which will house 400 children and  then meet her at Mamata Bal Sadan for lunch.

This land was purchased from the amount collected from her US visit and series of speeches in US.

Pic: Ground floor houses numerous awards and recognition honored upon Maai

This building will have boys from Pune as well as other mission locations like Wardha.
It has dining halls, bedroom halls with bunk beds, study areas and small ground for leisure.

It took us almost an hour to reach her mission in Saswad and it was already buzzing kids, visitors and activities setup for kids.

This is a simplistic setup exclusively for girls which houses different activities and residential facilities.
As it was Children’s Day, special celebrations included Mono Act plays, Mimicry to Camel rides.

Schemes for helping the orphans :
We adopted 2 orphan children ( a boy and a girl) for 1 year in the memory of my late grandparents.
Amount is Rs 12000 per child which includes their stay, education, food and medical care.
We will be informed about the child’s progress throughout the year.
We donated old clothes as well.

I don’t intend to highlight the donation part but the humility and welcoming nature of Sindhutai has really touched us.
Maai obliged us with few group photographs and later personally came down till our car to bid a goodbye.
We were really moved by her personal touch during the whole meeting.

Real Life Eye Opener

9th Dec 2011, 19:15 hrs, Location Dahisar

Today evening a 59 year old “North Indian “ Autorickshaw driver greeted me “Welcome Sir…Welcome aboard” and smiled back at my startled and stunned expression…!!! J
Auto driver : “I am trying to learn to speak in English. My kids are “High-Fi”, they talk with me in English and watch English Serials.”

I am used to many conversations with Auto drivers but this driver had the look in his eyes which conveyed his pride and honour…
Now the conversation continued in Hindi..
Auto driver : “Sir, I stay in Rawalpada slum areas between Dahisar Borivli. My kids studied in St.Mary’s Convent School Dahisar..
Eldest Son 97% in SSC, School Topper currently in Final Year at IIT Powai ( I had no guts to ask which Engg stream!!)
2nd Son 92% in SSC, currently in Thakur College of Engg studying B.E. Computer Science 2nd year.
                      Daughter in SSC currently…
Started my career in 1970 selling bananas and driving autos…”

Then I was blessed with 2 hindi poems by HariVanshrai Bachchan on Courage under Fire…!!!
An extremely proud father yet humble enough to say “Thank You Sir” when I got down…!!

I had no words left to say…I shook hands and congratulated him…!!!

A real life eye opener that I thought was worth sharing !!!

In-Dependence !!!

I call it the season of Pseudo – Patriotism...Its Bi-Annual...Lasts only for 3 days...

Do we really need to delve into the past, the glorious Freedom Struggle & India’s journey till date...
(Anyways not much has been achieved socially & politically)

A Satire like ‘Peepli Live’ beautifully portrays the Real India...Why migration occurs...Why farmers in an Agrarian country prefer suicide...

Economically...Yes!!!  Substantial Improvement...Our Currency finally has Symbol!!!

“No” I don’t want to picture India in Different Shades of Red, White, Saffron, Blue or Green...

Much has been written, said, commented about India & the Bi Annual Season gives us lots of the same old matter, same old comparisons to ponder over...

Why Can’t we move on...

The scenario gets murkier as we tend to take the 1st step...Its damn difficult...

Aaahhhh !!! Then we say it’s too difficult yar...& then the typical Indian mentality creeps in – Chalta Hai...Jo hota hai hone do...Dekh Lenge...& the next moment we dive back into our routines...

That’s why the title says ‘In-Dependence!!!’  It solely depends on the Inner You...

To be or not to be – A Marathi in Mumbai????

I am actually putting forth a question, contrast to the one that is being debated about. Should I be proud of being A Marathi in Mumbai or feel isolated and alienated?

The arising of this question in itself raises doubt to my feeling of belonging and love for my motherland. I am a Mumbaikar but still I am trying to be neutral and analyse the whole situation wherein I found myself staring at the above question.I am not analyzing any political viewpoints or inclinations nor am I Gung-ho about the movement that North Indians must be kicked out.

But somewhere down the line I feel the so called Rules of “Cosmopolitan” City are being applied to Mumbai only. Let me be very clear that Mumbai has whole heartedly accepted all its incoming guests where people have made fortunes and indirectly contributed to the growth of the city and the nation. The scale at which this has occurred is enormous as compared to any other city in India not even our capital. This has strained the infrastructure and DNA of this city but it has not complained till now. Statistics will prove this statement nevertheless. After having toured throughout India and abroad, I still feel Mumbai is the city that breathes life into you and gets you going. You may curse it for all varied reasons but believe me you will long to come back to this city when away from it.

The people who have come from outside have become a part of the city but the problem arises when these people try to put their own people in place of the locals. This can be evidently seen from examples like colleges built only for these so called “Minorities”. A trivial thing like the decision to write Sign Board of a shop in Marathi/Devanagari script causes a furore when it can be evidently seen the same happening in metro cities like Kolkata, Chennai and even cities like Ahmedabad and Bengaluru. The reason for hatred is partially politically oriented and is given too much air by the people on both sides of the table. For example -  An non Marathi MLA of Newly elected Maharashtra assembly firstly announces that he wouldn’t take oath in Marathi when no one has asked him or no one is bothered, but this is done purposely with varied political motives. And the reaction which we saw was glorified and the whole issue which had subdued after the elections being given new air and portrayed as Marathi vs Hindi row. These needless provocations are the ones I am worried about. These are the ways to divert the attention and polarize the people. Similar is the case of Chhat Puja which is being celebrated by North Indian population for a long time now in Mumbai. But an unnecessary glorification was done last year to win a popular sentiment and finally votes.

What I want to convey is that we citizens should not fall pray to such political provocations as we have all seen the most fierce some enemies turn out to be the best friends in no time and we all are left wondering. The political equation keeps changing and we the usual sufferers of it. We as educated citizens should get influenced by this and propagate the real message what we know is logically correct.

Coming back to the point of being a Marathi in Mumbai, I feel it’s not just the question of rights but a logical conclusion that the locals should be preferred at least at the lower string levels of public service and in organisations. This same is being followed all over the country and we here are being isolated for fighting for it. I expect all the incoming people to respect the culture, language and traditions of Mumbai and Maharashtra and by doing this we are not asking them to commit a crime nor a favour. It’s an unwritten rule wherein you become a part and parcel of the place where you stay and tend to follow the tradition and culture of that place.

Let’s keep our Mumbai one of the best places to live rather than just straining its resources and limitations. Constructively we have to fight the REAL issues facing us.......

F1 2009..rise of a new World Order...

Rags to Riches!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

True isnt it.... Team with no backing...Honda had left..leaving few committed men who were driven by a vision. The legendary Ross Brawn backed them with feeble financial support.
And emerged a new team - Brawn GP.No sponsors, new engine suppliers, high costs but belief in their cars and systems..
There 1st job was to prune their employee strength to half....Difficult but vital to survive..
There two drivers who had struggled for the past 2 years heaved a sigh of relief. Finally they had a car to drive and team to back them.
The Rise of the Phoenix - Brawn GP
8 Wins, 4 one-twos, 15 podiums,
Drivers and Constructors World Title
2009 season lived upto its expectations..A few may disagree..Diehard Ferrari fans maybe saddened ( I am one of them).
Lets first digest the disappointments -
  • Controversy with the Double Diffuser row, introduction of KERS ,slick tyres, lower and wider front wings; still the pure racing never died.
  • 2009 also proved to be a season to forget for Renault with the ghosts of last year's Singapore GP coming back to haunt them in the form of Crashgate scandal and eventually Renault losing its prize possession of Alonso to Ferrari and with the charismatic talisman Flavio Briatore gone, Renault looked a shadow of themselves in 2006-07.
  • Decision to leave F1 by BMW, Toyota and may be Renault as I write this...
  • Horrific accident to Massa denting any Ferrrari revival hopes and slump in Mclaren performance nevertheless they improved tremendously near then end of season.
  • The talks of a break away group loomed large finally to be resolved with a concorde agreement.
Nevertheless there were a lot of positives to take away namely rise of a new world champion driver and team, emergence of Redbull as a strong contender and Force India being able to prove its metal. The fantastic circuit of AbuDhabi providing a fitting end to a spectacular season. Kudos to Hermann Tilke and the people of UAE for developing a magnificent track and surroundings.
  • Stunning start by Button initially was marred by a lull in performance after mid season GP in Silverstone. But he had already paved a way for the title and remained in continuous pursuit.
  • Vettel and Webber gave a tough fight with a tightly knit team Redbull behind them, their performances improved as the season went on. Amazing job by Christian Horner.
  • The Old Warhorse Barrichello kept it going with a fews wins but could have had more had luck not parted him as it had done so many times in his career. He is too good a driver to be left with no World titles and we maybe seeing the end of his illustrious career come to an end next season in Williams.
  • Raikkonen was patchy I feel yet drove the Ferrari superbly at Spa garnering points as he went along in the season.

  • The story wont be complete without Force India. Our very own representative in F1.Hats off to Vijay Mallya and his team for improving a car beyond expectations in a very short space of time( plz note that this is the same backmarker car of Jordan and spykar). A Pole position at Spa by Fisichella was followed by a 2nd place finish (only to be deprived of 1st spot by the KERS of Ferrari) was a feather in the cap and a sign of an ever improving team. May 2010 be the year we see more glory come their way. Sutil and Liuzzi have to prove that they are really good.
Toyota exit is surely a dampener. Trulli and Glock had performed comparatively well but are left no drive as of yet. Same is the case with BMW, but exit of Toyota may be blessing in disguise for Sauber to return.

2010 may usher in a few new surprises with legendary Lotus returning under Mark Gascoyne and few more teams joining in. But the icing on the cake would be Kimi returning to Mclaren and we experiencing the arguably the 4 best drivers in 2 best teams with Brawn and Redbull completing the quartet of tough competitors.

Ohh!!! finally Max Mosley is gone and our very own Jean Todt is at the helm of FIA.....May this be the start of a new era at FIA...

Hope Alonso and Massa are gonna rock and we see the title back at the Prancing Horse stable….  Mclaren watchout!!!!!!!!!

HE is back!!!!!!!!!!

"HE" is back....
But HE was always there.....
But why do i feel HE is back...
BTW who is HE.....
HE is the only ONE graced with God's gift to carry a Nation's expectations, hopes, ambitions etc for not 1 but last 20 years....And with an ever pleasing smile...
Ya i know....this may seem as just one more in the umpteen blogs written over him....
Still...i feel i should start my blogging with him.....
Sachin R Tendulkar
5th Nov 09, aged 36 and facing a target of 350, this man single handedly scored half of the target and So called Gr8 batting lineup of India still failed to capitalize against a 3rd string Aus side...
Pity..Shame...Disheartening...
Nothing new...I feel.....Its an irony that such a gifted player has to face so much distress due to the lack of efforts of his compatriots...
Not now but for last 20 years...
HE-"The Rock of Gibraltar" still stands firm amidst the ever dangling Indian lineup.
Whats new!!! The superstars of our team just "twinkle" when they want to (most of the times to cement their place in the lineup).
This knock of 175 brought back the memories of the same sachin just 11 years back at Sharjah vs the same Aussies making back to back centuries to single handedly land the Trophy in our hands. He looked so similar with age no bar and the same attitude and finesse. And time stood Stillllllllll....
Absolutely amazing...
The Aussies must have loved to see his Back...HE stood between a certain victory and defeat....
Thats why i felt "He is back".
He has given so much pleasure over the years and we just long for more......

He is the only reason i still watch Indian Cricket....
People endlessly compare him with other greats...its futile...

I can go on and on and on...but its right to halt now...
Many more moments of glory and ecstasy await us....
Lets enjoy and soak the pleasure...
